So Much HTML It Makes Your Ass Hurt March.24.2004 :: 21:50
I'm starting to see things in HTML code right about now. I've spent the last week writing code and making images for the Virtual Fools Obscure Character Battle on that other part of my site not related to class. I'd like to think of this character battle as a type of collage… We've assembled characters from all over who are now juxtaposed in a single elimination tournament with a sort of meaning that never existed before. Well, maybe that's BS… but still. It's what I've been up to for the last two weeks.

I submitted 17 songs to Collage Set 7 as listed below:

1. Afrika Bambaataa and The Soulsonic Force - Looking For The Perfect Beat (6:47)
2. Blackalicious - Chemical Calestenics (3:21)
3. Chrono Trigger BoT Remix - Chrono Corridor (7:11)
4. Chrono Trigger BoT Remix - The Brink of Time (2:39)
5. Automator f. Kool Keith - King Of NY (3:52)
6. Del Tha Funky Homosapian - The Wacky World Of Rapid Transit (3:17)
7. DJ Logic With Project Logic - Sonic Thrust (6:22)
8. DJ Shadow - Midnight in a Perfect World (4:58)
9. Gorillaz - Left Hand Suzuki Method (12:31)
10. Gorillaz - Man Research -Clapper- (4:30)
11. Gorillaz - Punk (1:36)
12. Genius/GZA - Liquid Swords (4:32)
13. Hashim - Al-Naafiysh (7:43)
14. Nintendo - Zelda Techno Remix (3:00)
15. Photek - Ni Ten Ichi Ryu (5:58)
16. Saul Williams - Ocean Within Ft KRS-One (3:36)
17. Transformers - Unicron Theme Remix 2000 (4:15)

I'm amazed at the number of songs included in the other mixes that I already had on my computer. I'm always on the prowl for cool and new stuff to listen to from all over so this mix project has excited me. I just hope more people submit before Sunday so I can continue to extend my collection. On that note, does anybody have any DJ Q*bert?

I was a little disappointed at the length of Monday's class. There was a whole lot more I wanted to say and a few things I wanted to show to the class that I didn't get a chance to. I'm gonna use this blog time to throw out a few of my ideas and some links to interesting things.

I first want to jump on Jake's idea of the a soundtrack being the canvas and the images going on top of that. I find that to be true of many flash animations. Whether its seemingly random such as Hyakugojyuuichi (which is my all time favorite), or animation that uses the theme of the soundtrack like "Your Fire Department" from Something Awful, soundtracks give you something to say when you really don't have anything to say at all. The Fire Department soundtrack actually comes from the Prelinger Archive on Archive.org and the animation… ephemera anybody?

Flash is a medium which stimulates and music can help drive this stimulus. Take this Homestar Runner cartoon: 20x6 Versus 1936. I can assure you that it would not be as funny if it didn't have the accompanying soundtrack. The people over at Weebls-Stuff composed both the animation and soundtrack for this cartoon about things in Kenya and worked them together. But even though they composed both the music track had to be laid first so the editing could be matched to it, though I'm sure they had ideas for the animation beforehand. Anyway… it's clear that Jake's right about the importance of soundtracks.

I love Flash. I can't do it but I like what it represents. Actually, let me first say I don't like websites that are done in all Flash. I feel that something is lost when you take away the real guts of the page. I also feel that Flash websites aren't as navagable as html-based websites even though they seem to be more visually stimulating. Some sites, like Homestar Runner do Flash incredibly well and it fits the medium since it's all based around a cartoon anyway. Call me old fashion, but there are some sites that seriously don't need Flash. There's a common saying that goes, "Flash is just that - flash," and I agree.

Okay, enough ranting. Back to the point I was going to make. Flash allows the "masses" to do collage. Follow my logic here:
Flash is done on computers. Computers are connected to the Internet. People use the internet. The Internet contains a vast array of multimedia elements including sound, videos, and images. Flash incorporates sound, video, and image. So by this logic people can use the resources of the Internet and compile them in Flash. It's like multimedia paper collage and anyone who knows how to pirate Macromedia Flash Studios can do it! I dig that.
