So in the end what does collage do for video games? Overall it adds to the experience in ways other methods cannot. A video game is so large and consists of so many different mediums that it has nearly limitless resources from which to appropriate material. Bringing in specific references to outside materials has the ability to enhance gameplay and aesthetics when used appropriately. Personally, I warn against over-use of this technique, though, because it can degrade the originality of the experience. Earthbound draws a lot of references into characters and places, but none of this is overwhelming. If a game uses more outside sources than new material the player's focus might stray from the gameplay and relocated itself on the original locations of the appropriated items. Despite my warnings, I would love to see a really well done game of nearly all collage that could prove me wrong. If this happens I'll be glad to adjust my viewpoints accordingly. Jya,
