This case study is to explore the aesthetic value of video games and establish possible critera for judging the medium. I will be exploring the Super Nintendo Entertainment
System game "Chrono Trigger" published by Squaresoft. Areas of this game I will be exploring include the following catagories based loosely on Gilbert Seldes' The Seven Lively Arts:
- Giving Shape and Form to Immediate Experiences
- Deeply Embedded In Our Lives
- Emotionally Engaging - Plot/Story and Characters
- Dynamic and Kinetic - Responding and Ever Changing Environment
- Conventional and Experimental - Non Self-Indulgent Innovations
- Speaking to the Experience of the Individual
These criteria were established by Dr. Henry Jenkins of MIT to discuss the aesthetics of video games. I will also include my own thoughts and observations.
