E3 Wrap-Up

So now E3 has come and gone and I would feel bad if I didn’t put down my two cents here on this blog.

Best Showing:
The Nintendo Wii really won over my heart and mind this year. Watching Nintendo’s press conference - in which they basically just said “hey, you want to see how this works with games? Let’s do it!” - was a great experience. We saw Zelda, Red Steel, WiiSports Tennis… all of which were fully playable demos. In fact, Nintendo suprised us all by telling us that there were 27 games for show at this E3. Had Nintendo not had games this time around I would have been pissed… as I’m sure would the rest of the game community.

Ooh, Snap! Moment:
Peter Moore pulls up his sleeve during the Microsoft press conference to reveal a Grand Theft Auto IV tattoo. Wha!? GTA4 is going to be released either simultaneously on the PS3 and 360, or else there’s a chance that the 360 might even beat it to market. This comes after years of PS2 to Xbox ports of the Grand Theft Auto series. That makes a big ol’ difference for Sony.

Ooh, SNIZ-AP!!! Moment:
Nintendo invited a bunch of journalists to a special showing of something suprising. That suprising thing? Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Wii! Not unexpected… in fact, it was expected. They revealed some new characters in the trailer, showed off what appeared to be super-moves, and the trailer ended. But wait, what’s that? A Metal Gear Solid codec conversation comes up between Colonel Campbell and Snake. He says that there’s an invitation to join some Smash Bros. game! But Snake already knows and he’s staked out in a cardboard box getting to know the enemy already. How’s that for a good third party newcomer?

“Us Too” of the Show:
Sony seemed to have a big “yeah, we’re gonna do that too,” complex this year. After dropping a $600 bomb on us with the price at their press conference, they showed us the “six degrees of freedom” that come with the newly redesigned PS3 controller. It basically has a gyroscope in it, similar to that of the Wii-mote, but it doesn’t have an accelerometer or anything in it. Also, because they have come after the 360, everything they did seemed to say that they have all that Microsoft has (but not much more). I still have hope, though. It looks great, and games like Assassin’s Creed and Heavenly Sword look promising. Only time will tell.

Best Podcast of the Show:
Okay, not the best. But it’s my podcast and I wanted to pimp it out. J and I have been doing a podcast for our video game club at our University, and we did a nice long one after the big three press conferences. So go listen to it! You can download it directly at the Gamers Club Podcast Blogspot page or enter the feed into your favorite podcatching client or iTunes with our Feedburner feed.

Game on!
