Virtual Fools Presents: The Top 25 Video Games of All Time
By Everybody - Timeless
THE RULES
Rule #1 - Each writer must come up with their own list without the help of the other writers. This includes not sharing any parts of the list with the other writers until that section of games has been posted.
Rule #2 - The games that can be chosen can come from any home console or arcade game. Computer games are excluded for various reasons which we won't go into.
Rule #3 - Writers must come up with reasons for their choices. No explanations can be like, "this game is the best JUST BECAUSE." All writers can come up with their own criteria (see below sections) as long as it is reasonable.
Rule #4 - Once the first five games are posted writers are not allowed to change any games on their list.
Rule #5 - No ragging on eachother until after the lists are posted in their entirety. Then writers can make whole articles tearing up (or maybe even complimenting) the others' opinions. Reader feedback is encouraged too and your e-mails will be posted if you're so inclined. We'd love to hear from you!
And now, a little word from your writers:
J:
The Greatest Top 25 Video Game List that Has Ever Been Conceived by Man
Damn right it is. My list was painstakingly created through blood, sweat, and tears. Sleep was lost, many games were crossed out, added, unadded, and switched around before the final list was created. There's nothing more fun than reading though a countdown, but it's impossible to imagine how tough it really is to narrow down so many choices to a mere 25, and then order them around. Perhaps I should explain my criteria for creating this list, to avoid immediate explosions of, "YOU STUPID FUCK! WHY IS THAT EVEN ON THE LIST?!?" and, "WHAT!?!? THAT DIDN'T MAKE IT!!! YOU DIE NOW!!!"
1. The game must be fun. More importantly, I must think the game is fun. If the game is not fun, or cannot maintain fun for a long time (even if it was a big-selling/memorable game) it will not make the list. This takes many classic games out of the running, which are just not fun for that long (Pong, Centipede, Asteroids, Missile Command, Donkey Kong), or just not fun at all (Pitfall - god that game sucks). Also, games that people actually think are good but really suck ass will not be included on this list (Mortal Kombat).
2. Replay value/length of game is essential. If a game is only 5 hours long and only fun one time through, it won't be on the list.
3. How much did the game impact the world of games (in essence, uniqueness). Did it influence other games? Did it create a new genre? Did it make other games out at the time jealous? This is another thing I thought about while I ranked.
4. Widespread appeal of the game was also taken into account. Although I am aware Shaq Fu and The Simpsons Skateboarding both have a small, dedicated fan base, they just lack the widespread appeal to make it onto any Top 25 list. Or any Top Video Game list at all. In fact, people who like these games are a plague on the human genepool.
5. The game must stay crunchy in milk. No exceptions.
Kevin:
THE TOP 25 VIDEO GAMES OF ALL TIME
I guess that this can be thought of sort of like constructing the Hoover Dam: an endeavor requiring the utmost in human ingenuity, skill and forethought. Imagine Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling, that is, a work of genius partially the result of a team of artisans, but owing its inception to one man: our very own J. When I caught wind of the fact that he was going to undertake a Top 25 list, I immediately thought "Brave man, what headaches it will bring…but how cool at the same time." So, I conjectured that each of us 4, the Four Horsemen as well call ourselves ALL THE TIME, should in fact do our own lists. Thank Bokista for the suspense of breaking it into parts, and thank Jimmy for being a good sport about us making fun of him for LOSING HIS HAIR IN A BET. Down to business.
My list is the result of years of adept playing, thousands of hours spent reading about video games, and enough fond memories to fill an empty septic tank. A big one. With all of these lists, there will of course be biases toward different systems and eras, but keep in mind that I am right in all matters concerning everything. No doubt the others will say the same. That is why, at the conclusion of this wankfest, we shall be locking horns and defending, to the death, our choices. Perhaps the next time we all converge, there will be a rumble. Who knows. Point is, this could get dirty. But fear not! From me, you will get well informed, academic postulates about the best video games ever to grace the screen. You will be brought to the brink of tears and back. You will no doubt wake up in the middle of the night with an insatiable desire to play these games. And you will thank me for it. Either that or you will disagree with me and side with one of the others. Whatever happens, keep an open mind throughout. Play more video games! Let us know what you think. We may even have a "reader mail" section, assuming we have readers. At the conclusion of this festival, think of Virtual Fools as your source for all things authoritative. I mean it.

Bobby Bokista:
MY "I PROMISE I'M A REAL GAMER AND NOT JUST A COLLECTOR AND ARCHIVIST" TOP 25
I have been called many a thing recently: "Collector", "Hobbyist", "Archivist", "Guy Who Sucks At Video Games"... but deep down inside I am a true gamer. I hope that my list reflects my interests as a gamer and my knowledge of the history of video games. You might notice that a lot of my choices represent breakthrough and innovative games... but if it's shitty and not fun to play then it's out of the question.
Some of the games I haven't completed but I've played all of them for a reasonable amount of time. I've also dug deep for a variety of games and a personal experience to go with 'um. Hoping you enjoy my selections, I'll also take this time to tell you what I'm doin' with this.
I'm in charge of getting everything up on the web... formatting, coding, ftpeeing (hee hee, I said pee), and all that jazz. I'll be posting each writer's five as soon a we get done with each section... which sometimes takes a while because we're students and all. . It gets faster as I go along and get a flow down for HTMLing. This whole site has been coded without the use of things like Dreamweaver or whatever else is out there. Thanks to J for the idea of a Top 25 list and thanks to Kevin for the idea of the multi-list.
And with that unfunny little paragraph, let's get this party started right!!!
