Video Game Fans as Textual Poachers
By Bobby Bokista - 01.01.05

The Perfect Poach

Perhaps one day when it becomes easier to program, fan games will be the primary mode of audience expression. A fan game, while difficult to produce with current technologies, would best capture the experience of playing the original game. Not only could fans read new stories about the character's exploits but they could participate in them. Other modes of expression like fan fiction, music, artwork, and flukes would not necessarily be rendered defunct. Rather, all forms of output could be put into dialogue with each other. Until that time, fans should be encouraged to appropriate material from their favorite games as they do now as well as look for new means of creative expression.
