So what is the "point" of novelty songs? That they're crass? That they suck?

the original version of the song from 1962 he wrote as a children's Christmas song...lots of lyrics about kids, etc etc. and the humorous gifts and all the reindeer and the out of the blue appearance of Clyde, replacing Rudolph who dislocated his hip in a Twist contest. he re-recorded the song in 1985 and made a music video of it, which you included here. This 1985 recording is way different than the 1962 version...almost entirely re-written but keeping the main lines of the title and the catch-phrase "He's Everywhere! He's Everywhere!" intact.

oh geeze...i think the whole point of "novelty songs" is being missed here. these songs aren't designed to be "let's gather around the tree and hold hands and sing...fa la la la la". the swipe at Ray is what prompted me to make a comment, though. the point of that song is he took the expression of Santa Claus watching and knowing who's naughty or nice and he applied it in a love song scenario telling his girlfriend she better be good 'cause Santa Claus is Watching You...it must be of a desired taste but I think it's funny.
